Work environment: The Fixed Networks Research program, as part of the world-leading Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs research center, has expert teams located in Antwerp, New Jersey, Stuttgart and Shanghai. The Access Hardware Platform team in Fixed Networks Research is the proven innovation engine for next generation hardware concepts & technologies. We target to move beyond regular evolutionary steps & create revolutionary ASIC & FPGA solutions for future networks. Goal: Your goal as Digital ASIC/FPGA Researcher is to identify and research groundbreaking ASIC technologies in Bell Labs. You act as prime reference in Digital ASIC/FPGA Research in close cooperation with business, academic and industrial partners. You create new intellectual property through patents, simulators, research platforms, hardware/ASIC innovation… to target true differentiating Alcatel-Lucent products. Your main responsibilities will include: Specialize in hardware acceleration for PHY & MAC layer and real-time scheduling Grow the digital ASIC/FPGA hardware competence area in the access research space Identify & explore new differentiating ASIC solutions through modeling, simulation, FPGA-based prototyping and ASIC realizations of digital network building blocks Define & contribute to medium & long term business impacting research programs Extract high-quality intellectual property from your theoretical & experimental work Act as technical advisor towards various internal & external stakeholders through technical cooperation, customer visits, knowledge transfers Challenge technical & experimental contributions from academic & industrial partners Create & maintain strong collaborative associations with other locations & programs Your main challenges will be: To diverge: define creative “out-of-the-box” solutions to complex theoretical, experimental and business relevant problems in the scope of access technology To converge: distil the proper elements and take a strong position towards a single game-changing solution with at least a 10x impact on the original problem To be able to work independently and effectively as part of a diverse multi-site team To continuously learn, master and create new, leading-edge technologies to improve the Alcatel-Lucent’s product portfolio Location: Antwerp, Belgium Mobility: occasional, short (1day-2wk) international trips in the scope of our multi-site team cooperation, meetings with technology partners or customer facing engagements


Technical background and experience: PhD or Master in (applied) engineering sciences in digital ASIC/FPGA research, specifically in the area of digital signal processing ASICs & FPGAs Knowledge of PHY & MAC layer protocols (xDSL, xPON, (Euro)DOCSIS, LTE, 4/5G) Knowledge & hands-on experience with system simulation & ASIC design tools Knowledge & hands-on experience with (low level, real-time) programming languages Experience & affection with experimental lab setups & high-end test equipment Baseline knowledge on analog/mixed signal ASIC trade-offs and network technologies Social Skills (behavior, attitude, language knowledge, …): You are a quick learner, able to identify & research new ASIC & network technologies You have a positive & open mindset and have strong drive to succeed You enjoy theoretical deep dives as well as experimental & broadly scoped work You are ready to be challenged outside your comfort zone to achieve top results You are stimulated to conduct research autonomously while contributing to team-oriented projects in a cooperative and expert-rich environment You are fluent in English and a natural communicator in a multi-disciplinary team
