Ophthalmologists (with the ability to perform surgery i.e. cataract surgery). Ophthalmologists work in the Netherlands in an hospital or a private clinic. They are mostly self-employed, which means that they get paid according to the number and the kind of treatments that they perform. The average income of an ophthalmologist in the Netherlands is around € 250.000,- gross per year. From this income, tax, pension, disability insurance and liability insurance must be deducted. Approximately 50% of this amount remains in net earnings per year. A large part of the treatments that an ophthalmologist in the Netherlands performs is cataract surgery, some eyelid surgery and other smaller types of surgery. Sometimes we also seek opthalmologists without any surgical experience for treatment of outpatient only (inl. Laser treatments). These ophthalmologists earn less than the ones that operate, depending on the setting and their exact skills.
